Swazi Team Monthly Prayer Calendar - June 2009

Monday June 1: Because of the concern of charismatic tendencies and practices displayed at the National Easter Services, the Baptist Convention of Swaziland scheduled a time of teaching on the 22nd-23rd of May at the Manzini Baptist Church. Steven Allen taught about a “Biblical Response to the Prosperity Gospel” and Wayne Myers taught on a “Biblical Response to Speaking in Tongues.” Pray those who attended understood Baptist doctrine and the scriptural concept of “tongues”. Pray members of our Baptist churches will commit to making their churches stronger in Baptist beliefs as well as Christian beliefs.

Tuesday June 2: Thank you for praying for the National Youth Committee’s planning retreat on the 29th-30th of May. Many plans were discussed and pray for final direction through plans for both the upcoming Youth Leaders’ Retreat and the National Youth Camp. Pray for a spirit of unity and one mind of all decisions.

Wednesday June 3: Pray for the Swazi Team as “we” search for ways to effectively fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic that is taking the lives of so many Swazis.

Thursday June 4: The Warrens began homeschooling the last week in May. Since the family has settled in and have a better feel for their ministry, it was felt a change would give more flexibility with schedules/ministry, allow Bert and Lisa to be more accommodating with volunteer teams and at the same time give the children “first hand” experience in more of the ministry while continuing education. Pray for Bert and Lisa as they begin the task of homeschooling their children and pray for Jesse, Matthew and Sarah as they adjusts to education outside the school environment.

Friday June 5: Rejoice with the Maloma and Ntuthwakazi Baptist Churches in their revival services last month-- Maloma’s revival May 4-15 and Ntuthuwakazi May 18-21. Descisions were made and a spirit of unity was present. Pray for true revival in the heart of both churches and communities. Pray those who made decisions will truly know what it means to follow Jesus Christ with all their heart, mind and soul.

Saturday June 6: The executive committee of the Baptist Convention of Swaziland meets today. Pray this meeting will reflect the desire to glorify the Lord in all that is said and done. Pray for good attendance of those on the executive committee.

Sunday June 7: Continue to pray for all our Swazi Baptist churches that are without pastoral leadership. Pray for these churches to remain one body and faithful in serving one another as they patiently wait on the Lord to provide the right person to lead these churches.

Monday June 8: Pray Matthew 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciple, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray for the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” Also, pray for the Swazi Team as personnel job requests are prayerfully submitted for laborers to come to Swaziland.

Tuesday June 9: Hunter and Brinkley Johnson (sisters) arrive today to serve with the Swazi Team June 9-July 8, leading children/youth Bible studies, National Youth Leader’s Retreat June 26-27, partnering with other mission organizations and other various ministry opportunities. Pray for Hunter and Brinkley as they serve with the Swazi Team and for health and safety as they travel on June 8th to Swaziland.

Wednesday June 10: Mandla Sigwane, pastor of the Phuzumoya Baptist Church had a vision to reach his home are, Maphungweni and asked the missionaries and volunteer team members to join him in this vision. In April a volunteer team held revivals in this area. The outcome was “simply phenomenal.” One evening over 400 people came. Many throughout the services responded to the all to accept Jesus as their Savior. Pray for the new outreach group in Maphungweni that is fast becoming a church with a body of brand new believers. Pray for leadership to develop from this new fellowship.

Friday June 12: Today, Monica Allen’s mom, Polly Trice arrives to spend several weeks with the Allen family. Lacie and Nathan are very excited that “gogo” Polly is coming for a visit. Pray for Polly’s safety and health as she makes the long trip to Swaziland.

Saturday June 13: Continue to pray for Wayne Myers’ brother and sister struggling with cancer. Pray the Lord will draw Terry and JoAnn into His healing embrace.

Sunday June 14: Pray for the new outreach group in Lesibovu, south of Manzini where Steven Allen recently started a Bible study. His is averaging about 50 people each Saturday afternoon and a group is already asking when Sunday morning services can begin. Plans are being discussed to start once a month on Sunday mornings. Pray for God’s wisdom in guiding each step for the Allens with this new group. Even now, pray for leaders that will develop within the group to be trained. Recently, nine people accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Monday June 15: Continue to pray for Lisa Warren’s father, Lloyd Claiborne as he continues to recover from his surgery and stroke. He is currently taking physical therapy. Pray his strength will fully return and his recovery will be complete.

Tuesday June 16: Praying for Our Troops:
Give thanks for all who serve our country through military service at every level in every branch. Pray for safety and protection from God, for families who struggle with absent parents and multiple deployments, and pray for all who lead our troops to have God’s wisdom and grace.

Wednesday June 17: Pray for Lacie Allen today on her birthday!!
Pray for the Allen family to have strength and wisdom as Steve and Monica balance family and ministry each day. Pray their walks with the Lord will grow more and more and specifically direction for their family as they lead to teach Lacie and Nathan to love the Lord Jesus with all their hearts. Since the weekly church services are conducted in siSwati it is difficult for the children as they don’t understand what is being said. Pray that Steve and Monica will continue to find ways to make weekly worship at home positive and meaningful for the children, especially Lacie.

Thursday June 18: Pray for the Manzini and Sithwethweni Baptist Churches as they continue to meet concerning the possibility of merging the two churches. They are currently trying to work on a joint constitution. Please pray they will be able to agree on who will lead the church after the proposed merger. This is the major issue regarding the coming together of the two congregations.

Friday June 19: Pray the strongholds that hold the King of Swaziland, wives and children in cultural bondage will be broken. Pray a clear presentation of the gospel will be shared and hearts will be convicted of the need for Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Saturday June 20: Pray for protection for girls living in situations that are not safe and lead to sexual abuse and possible death. Pray the Swazi government will take notice of the plight of women and children and will seek to pass laws that will protect them. Pray for a safer place to live for children that will allow them to have a future.

Sunday June 21: Happy Father’s Day!!
Steven Allen has a wonderful opportunity to serve in Israel on an archeological dig with Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Pray for his safety as he travels and a wonderful time of holiday being refreshed doing something that is a passion of his heart.

Monday June 22: Please pray that with the help of God’s Word, Swazi youth understand the True Love Waits message and the impact it could have on the entire country, especially in view of the AIDS pandemic.

Tuesday June 23: Pray for Pastor Mandla Sigwane to remain faithful as he is obedient to God’s leading in starting new churches in the Lubumbo region. He is faced with many challenges in this task; conveniences like transportation that we so often take for granted.

Wednesday June 24: On May 9th Barbara Myers and Annah Thwala taught 120 children in the Lubumbo region the AIDS booklet “Learning About AIDS”. Please pray the children in Swaziland will learn and understand how AIDS affects the body. Pray also each will learn and understand God’s plan for living and marriage.

Thursday June 25: Pray for several churches currently trying to obtain plots for building new church structures or shifting existing structures. Hawane Baptist is waiting for a final decision for their plot to be marked. They recently had a new chief appointed in their area so the council is getting ready to soon mark their plot. Victory Baptist and Ntsintsa Baptist were recently approved for new plots and both have begun building. Victory plans to move a bit closer to the main road and use most of the existing church materials. Ntsintsa Baptist has met in a Red Cross building since it was started in the 1990s and desires to have its own structure. Mphembekati Baptist has to move their existing structure due to being too close to a school. Peniel Baptist recently lost their church meeting place so they are seeking a new one temporarily until they can build they own structure.

Friday June 26: June 26-27 is the National Youth Leader’s Retreat. Pray for this important retreat for all the youth leaders and vice-youth leaders of the Swazi Baptist churches. Hunter Johnson will be the main speaker. Pray God will move in a mighty way among the hearts of our youth leaders.

Saturday June 27: The Myers have expressed concern with the increased Muslim influence in Nhlangano, a small “bush” town of approximately 4,000. More and more of the small businesses are being operated by Indian Muslims from South Africa who promise help with school fees and jobs if recipients convert to the Muslim faith. Pray Swazis will not be easily misled by the Muslim faith. Pray for a stronger and bolder witness of the believers in Nhlangano and all of Swaziland.

Sunday June 28: Pray for workers to help disciple all new believers that are professing their faith in Christ. Pray they would mature spiritually and not be led astray by incorrect doctrine.

Monday June 27: Frank and Sheri Moran, missionaries to the Deaf of South Africa (and beyond) had a great opportunity to meet two Swazi Deaf leaders during the South African Deaf Christian Camp March 23-30. The Morans were invited to come and help with the Swazi Deaf Christian Conference/Camp in October near Mbabane. Please lift the Swaziland Deaf and their leaders in your prayers. Pray for the Morans to be prepared to share God’s Word to those attending the camp and God’s Word will expand throughout Swaziland.

Tuesday June 30: One Sunday the adult Sunday School Class of the Nhlangano Baptist Church prayer walked around the Regional Education Office where the church meets. It was a joy to pray for the many living in the houses, passing by in vehicles and walking down the streets. Prayer walking has been a wonderful tool used to open doors of ministry and evangelization. Pray the ministry of prayer walking will continue to be used to reach many lost Swazis. Pray more and more Swazis will desire to have a personal prayer life and will include prayer walking as part of their church’s ministries.

Sarah Warren's BIG news!!!

This has been a BIG weekend for our family and for the ministry here in Swaziland! Early Sunday morning, Sarah accepted Christ as HER personal Savior. She has been asking lots of questions about this, even before we left the States, and now she is our new sister in Christ, praise the Lord!!!!

Also on this same day, we visited Maphungwane, the area the last volunteer team came and worked with. Since revivals, it has been growing by leaps and bounds, so much that the people can no longer fit into the pastor's home. We had church this past Sunday outside on their grass mats, followed by baptism of all the many who were saved during revival, and at the following services. We witnessed 57 new believers be baptized, plus one more that stole our heart ... it was Sarah, #58! You all know how scared Sarah is of water, and today you would have never known. She walked right up to the baptismal and waited with Uncle Wayne (our team leader). Once they presented her, she got right in and was ready for her turn! I wish you could have been there to celebrate this day with us, and to hear the beautiful sounds of these new believers sharing testimony and singing to the Lord. As we were in the baptism service, the pastor drew our attention to the sun (which was shining brightly), and there was a rainbow of light circling it. I tried my best to get pictures, but it was too bright. God is working in the hearts of many here, and we have been so blessed to be a witness to His mighty Hand. Thank you for continuing to pray for our family and the people of Swaziland! Thank you for all your love, support and prayers!

Myers Weekly Prayer Letter - May 25, 2009

REVIVAL HAS COME TO SWAZILAND….
Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.
-Deeuteronomy 7:9
We have wonderful to blessings to share with you this week. Blessings that I personally thought I would never hear or see. But our Lord is faithful and He is working in Swaziland!!

-First of all the teaching scheduled for the weekend (Friday and Saturday) went well. Approximately 50 representatives from the Swazi Baptist churches met to hear the Biblical response to the “Prosperity Gospel” and “Speaking in Tongues.” Many had questions and it was apparent that more teaching is needed. More and more of our pastors and leaders need to get into the Word to find the answers to problems they encounter as they lead and guide their churches. Pray our pastors and leaders will be convicted of the need to go the Lord and His Word for the answers to their spiritual questions as well as problems. It is easy for them to come to the missionaries for all their questions and answers. Pray another teaching time can be scheduled that will allow for a “question and answer time.”

- Saturday afternoon, missionary Steve Allen met with the new outreach group in Lesibovu (south of Manzini). There were approximately 50 that came prepared to hear Bible teaching. We praise the Lord for the wonderful blessing that occurred during this Bible study. Out of 50, 28 individuals asked Christ to come into their hearts!! Please rejoice with the Swazi Team and especially the Allens as they minister with this group. Pray the blessings will continue!!

-Yesterday, Wayne and I along with the Warren family attended the new outreach group at Maphungweni started in April. Wayne was scheduled to baptize new believers from the revival services in April as well as new believers from the last couple of weeks. Because there were so many (approximately 120 adults/youth/children) who had come to worship, we could not meet in the “meeting house” so we met outside. When it was time for baptism, Pastor Sigwane of the Phuzumoya Baptist told them to “line up” and they did, all 57 of them. For the first time in his life as well as our time in Swaziland, Wayne baptized 57 Swazis and one MK (missionary kid) on one day!! Isn’t that awesome!! Please say AMEN!!! I honestly was overwhelmed at what the Lord had done to prepare this place for His ministry.
Pray these 58 new baptized believers will understand the importance of their decision. Pray they will not allow culture and traditions to keep them from faithfully serving the Lord.

One of the young men from Phuzumoya that is helping with the leadership of this group told me that a few of them from Phuzumoya had begun a two-week praying and fasting at the Maphwungweni meeting house. For them, it is a time of spiritual renewal and a time of spiritual cleansing for this community. These are his words, “I can’t believe how the Lord is sustaining me. We began this fast on Monday. The first three days we did not eat or drink and on the second day we visited homesteads. At the end of the day, I was so tired and I didn’t think I could continue but the Lord told me He would lift me up and He would sustain me and He did. On the fourth day of the fast, we began to drink tea three times a day and drink all the water we wanted. On Wednesday night around midnight we encountered a demonic attack that was so apparent. We all began praying and the Lord helped us fight this attack. I can’t believe how the Lord is teaching me and I see Him all around me.” Pray for this group as they continue to pray and fast in the Maphungweni area until Monday (June 1st). Pray the Lord will continue to show His strength and mercy during this group’s spiritual ministry.

-Upon their arrival to Maphungweni yesterday, Lisa Warren told me Sarah had something to share. The exciting news was that Sarah accepted the Lord yesterday morning. J So, after 57 Swazis had been baptized (the water quite obviously dirty), Sarah was baptized by her “Uncle” Wayne. What a blessing for this family. Please pray for Sarah as she begins her life in the Lord. Pray for the Warren family as they continue to grow together spiritually and minister together in Swaziland.

May 29-30 is the National Youth Committee’s planning retreat in Mbabane. Pray for our NYC as they meet to finalize plans for the National Youth Leaders Retreat, National Youth Camp in August and other important issues for the youth of all the Swazi Baptist churches. Pray for the committee to be in unity and one mind on ALL decisions.

Hunter and Brinkley Johnson (sisters) will arrive in Swaziland June 9-July 8 to minister with the Swazi Team leading children/youth Bible studies, partnering with other mission organizations and various ministry opportunities as well as leading the National Youth Leader’s Retreat on June 25-27. Hunter and Brinkley will be in the Shiselweni region with us June 28-July 8 to minister to children and youth. Pray for Hunter and Brinkley as they prepare to serve with the Swazi Team and for health and safety as they travel on June 8 to Swaziland for one month. Pray the Lord will use their gifts and talents to minister to the Swazi people.

-Continue to pray for Lisa Warren’s father as he recovers from surgery and stroke. He recently was moved to a new facility and is undergoing physical therapy.

Our thanks goes to each of you who prayed and sent personal sympathy to us on the death of Wayne’s brother, Larry on the 22nd of May. Larry was 54 and died of a massive heart attack. This was quite unexpected. Please remember the Myers family as they deal with the loss of the youngest sibling.
Funeral Arrangements: The funeral will take place tomorrow, May 26 at the Clark Legacy Center Brannon Crossing on Fayette County Line, Nicholasville, Kentucky. The visitation hours are from 4:00pm-6:00pm with the service to follow 6:00pm-7:00pm.

Day of Prayer: Loving the peoples of the hard places
Geographic isolation, physical hardship, threats of violence and lack of freedom and resources are among the biggest barriers separating the lost from the opportunity to know Jesus.
That’s why Southern Baptists are coming together to show their love for lost peoples living in hard places during the Day of Prayer and Fasting for World Evangelization. On May 31, churches across the United States will unite in prayer, asking God to move powerfully among the most spiritually dark places on the planet.
A new DVD focusing on the Day of Prayer is available for free from the IMB by calling (800) 999-3113 or by downloading the video at
imb.org/dayofprayer. The website also features other resources to help churches, small groups or Sunday School classes pray for peoples living in hard-to-reach places.

Prayer for Wayne Myers' family

"Larry Myers went to sleep at 3:30 on May22. He was very peaceful with no struggling. He's with Mom now in heaven with no pain." - part of an email Wayne and Barbara received from family in the USA

We were expecting to hear something so this message was not unexpected. The family had decided to take him off the life support system on Friday.

Please remember Wayne in prayer. It is hard to lose a loved one and not be able to be with the family during the grieving process. Please pray for the Lord’s loving arms to embrace him and give him the comfort and peace he needs. Please remember the remaining 5 brothers and sisters as they deal with this loss.

Thank you for your prayers.

Pray for Wayne's brother, Larry Myers

We are requesting prayer for Wayne’s youngest brother, Larry who was admitted to the hospital on the 19th with pulmonary edema. We received this email from Wayne’s sister Patsy:

Larry is in the hospital, South ICU, Lynda took him in about 10:30 last night (19th) 10 minutes later he coded. By the time I got there, he was interbated and going down fast. They slowed him down enough to take a cat scan. he coded twice there and once after they got him back to his room. Got him stable enough to move him to ICU where they found that he had had a flash pulmonary edema. Something caused a rush of fluid into his lungs. In ICU he had several seizures before they could get his stats good enough with loads of medicines. The worst thing is his temp stayed 104 for 3 or 4 hours. Hit over 106 later. Now they are checking for brain activity.

Patsy just phoned and to give us an update. He had another seizure and the meds are keeping his blood pressure up. The situation seems to be quite critical and the family will definitely appreciate your prayer support.

Please pray, may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Thank you,
Wayne and Barbara Myers

MK View of Medical Mission Trip

Swaziland Medical Missions trip –Robert Moore

It’s not often that you hear of a missionary kid actually going on a mission trip. An MK’s life on the field could be viewed very simply as a highly extended mission trip. However, I recently had an opportunity to go on a mission trip not in my own country of residence, South Africa, but in the small, land-locked country of Swaziland. The mission: to try to meet the medical needs of the rural Swazi people we came into contact with and, of course, the purpose of any good mission trip- to spread the gospel.

The story really starts last year, when I had the privilege of having Dr Grant and Carey Barr as the volunteer leaders for the older youth of our AMTM. They learned that I was interested in studying medicine, and subsequently they gave me the chance to come on the next mission trip that they had planned in March 2009. Naturally I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of a medical mission trip, both because of the experience that I would gain and for the chance to learn more about the various fields of medicine and the differences between them.
Skip ahead to the next year about the same time, and you find me thinking about the trip, the school that I would miss because of it, and the function I would perform since I would be the least qualified/educated person there. This last thought worried me because I felt that I might not have a function other than to be there to learn. But, the chance to learn by itself was definitely enough motivation to go. With that, I resolved to be helpful, in any area that my help was needed or asked for. I was ready and excited for the trip and tried to keep in mind at all times that it is not I who should be working; it should be God working in and through me.
The team arrived on a Sunday evening; it was great to see everyone again- the team consisted of some people that I remembered, and others that I had never met before. There were 10 of them: 4 doctors, 1 physical therapist, 1 paramedic, 1 dental assistant, 2 teachers and the team leader, Rick. I made the team 11, but there was still ample room on the two Volkswagen vans (I mean this in African terms- the team might disagree with me). Anyway, the plan was to leave at about 6 in the morning, which meant an early, bleary-eyed trip.

The morning came, and surprisingly enough I was wide-awake for having had a 5am wakeup. It was still fairly difficult to shake the feeling that I would not really be needed on the team. However, that day we would not be going to any clinics so it did not matter. Instead, I focused my attention on picking the brains of the doctors that rode in the same vehicle as me. This was more difficult than you would think as the professionals were refreshing their knowledge of common diseases that don’t occur much in the States. So, after breakfast on the road, I switched vans to give those who had gone to school for longer than I had been alive- I’ll just call them the doctors - some study time.

The afternoon came, and after a fairly smooth border crossing (who knew permanent residency would hold things up?) we made our way to the guest house to settle in, shower, and be briefed for the next day. During the briefing I was given the post of working at triage. This helped me greatly: I now had an objective, and it was something I could do well. That night I prayed for a successful next day; that our team’s attitude would be a reflection Christ’s love; and that whatever the circumstance, it would not be us acting – it would be Christ.

The next day came quickly, and after a wonderful breakfast provided by the guest house, we were off to save some people! By this, I mean more spiritually really than physically, but both apply. The most interesting thing was that we would be working through translators. Once we had arrived at the church where we were going to set up, we began unloading the multiple trunks which contained the medications and supplies that the doctors would be using.
Always ahead of the game, Rick, our team leader, quickly devised a process for people to be treated effectively and promptly. I worked with the paramedic at the desk in the very of the building, as the first station that people would have to go through before they received care. I believe this post was necessary as it determined the doctor the patient would see, depending on their chief complaint. There were many interesting complaints: one lady complained that her arms became tired if she used them, to name but one. However, the hardest part of the job was not keeping a straight face as the patients rattled off their ailments, nor was it trying to keep the descriptions of their problems to a minimum, it was trying to accurately spell the names of the patients. This was the area that came more naturally for me, as one somewhat-native to Africa. I now could perform a fairly specific function that applied to my knowledge! As the day progressed it became obvious that there was a slightly better way of doing triage which was implemented the following day. The rest of the day saw a fairly good number of patients- not the most that week- but an amount that I could do other tasks as well. These included holding down children for procedures, handing out painkillers to mundane and vague ailments, and sitting in on diagnoses. All of these were great learning experiences for me and I am grateful for them.

The following days were similar in nature; some more busy than others, but all were filled with great opportunities and insight both from the team, and through the work that we did. I consider myself blessed to have been a part of that team. I know that God strengthened me spiritually as well as further confirmed my call towards medicine. I am also certain that the team was guided by God, because all of the team worked in harmony to accomplish the tasks that were at hand. There is no earthly possibility that the team could have worked that well without the Lord’s presence and provision. God has to receive all credit for the success of the trip, because all in all, He is the one who orchestrates eternity. We are mere vessels to be shaped and used by Him. I look forward to see what He will do in my life next…

Myers Weekly Prayer Letter - May 18, 2009

Choose the one thing, the necessary thing, each day: Choose with your whole heart to live every day for God. Love Him, worship Him, walk with Him, serve Him, and look forward to being with Him in eternity. –Elizabeth George

We rejoice with the Maloma Baptist Church today!! The church completed its two week revival on Friday night. The spirit was good throughout the services and a few youth from other Shiselweni region Baptist churches helped with evangelism during the day as well as assisting with the services each night. There were decisions made and we ask you to pray for true revival in the heart of the church and community. Pray those who made decisions will truly know what it means to follow Jesus Christ with all their heart, mind and soul.
-This evening revival services begin at the Ntuthwakazi Baptist Church May 18-21 (Mon-Thur). Pray for the one preaching and for the church to be spiritually prepared for this time of revival.

Attention!! Please pray for a special time of teaching on Friday May 22nd at the Manzini Baptist Church. Missionaries Steven Allen and Wayne Myers will lead this time. Steven will teach about a “Biblical Response to the Prosperity Gospel” and Wayne on a “Biblical Response to Speaking in Tongues.” Pray many from our Swazi Baptist churches will attend and for Steve and Wayne as they continue to prepare to teach on these important doctrinal subjects.

--Begin praying for the National Youth Leader’s Retreat (June 25-27 with Hunter Johnson leading) as well as our youth leaders and vice-youth leaders of the Swazi Baptist churches. Pray for all the logistics to be finalized and for God to move in a mighty way among the hearts of our youth leaders.

GOD IS MOVING AMONG THE DEAF IN SWAZILAND!!
Frank and Sheri Moran missionaries to the deaf in South Africa (and beyond) had a great opportunity to meet two Deaf leaders in Swaziland during the South African Deaf Christian Camp March 20-23. These leaders shared with Frank and Sheri that presently 8 groups are gathering to worship. The Morans were invited to come and help with the Deaf Christian Conference/Camp in October near Mbabane (Swaziland). Please lift the Swaziland Deaf and their leaders in your prayers. Pray the Morans will be prepared to share God’s Word with them, and God’s work will expand.

***Last year a young man appeared at our gate with questions. He had been working for the Muslims in town but he had quit. When he was leaving his employers told him since he had quit his job with them he would die. He came to ask Wayne if this was true. I have a great concern with the Muslim influence that is becoming stronger in Nhlangano, a small “bush” town of approximately 4,000. More and more of the small businesses are being operated by the Indian Muslims who come from South Africa. Last year a Mosque was built and indication has been given that Swazis are helped with school fees and given jobs if they convert to the Muslim faith (such as the young man at the gate). For so many Swazis who have no one to help them with schooling or financially, the choice is an easy one. Pray for Swazis living in poverty who are being easily misled by financial assistance if they convert to the Muslim faith. Pray for a stronger and bolder witness of the believers in Nhlangano.

PRAY FOR THE FOLLOWING IMB EVENTS:
-Field Personnel Orientation, April 20 through June 18
-IMB Board of Trustee Meeting in Denver, Colorado, May 18-20
-Missionary Appointment Service in Denver, Colorado, May 20
May our heavenly Father abundantly bless the leaders and participants of each of these events. May His light invade the darkness as His messengers are equipped and enter into the battle.

Myers Weekly Prayer Letter - May 11, 2009

Yesterday during the adult Sunday School hour the teacher of the Nhlangano Baptist Church led her class in a time of prayer walking around the area of the Regional Education Office where the church meets. It was a joy to be able to pray for the many living in the houses, passing by in vehicles, and walking up and down the streets. What a blessing to be able to pray for the many living in Nhlangano that do not know the Lord as their SaviorA heart full of love for others is a heart that walks with God and daily experiences His presence. Focusing on others in prayer is one way that will help you love your friends, families, co-workers, and neighbors in your heart, thoughts and actions.
--Elizabeth George

Last year we asked you to pray for the former pastor of the Velebantfu Baptist Church and his wife. This couple virtually split up in 2006 when the husband sent his wife back to her mother’s homestead. He then took a wife in the traditional way even though he was still married to his first wife (they were married in the Christian way and therefore needed to get a divorce). In 2008 the husband sent his “second” wife away and sought to seek reconciliation with his first wife. Since that time the couple (with two small girls) has struggled to stay together and be a Christian family. Problems continue to plague them. The wife is very jealous and her husband’s past relationships continue to haunt their complete reconciliation. Yesterday, in an emergency situation, Wayne met with this couple for almost three hours. Swazi leadership from the Nhlangano Baptist Church also ministered to this family. The same issues were the source of the problem. Please pray for this family who continues to struggle with the pass and lack of trust and forgiveness. Pray their hearts will soften and allow the Lord to perform complete healing. Pray Johannes and Lindiwe Tfwala will not allow satan to win but will seek their victory in the Lord Jesus Christ.

For the last couple of years non-Baptist doctrine has been introduced by visiting speakers and preachers at the Swazi Baptist National Easter Services. This year include a chorus leader asking the congregation if she could speak in tongues and when no one answered commenced to do so (speaking in tongues). This greatly concerned a number of pastors and missionaries and felt the issue needed to be addressed during the last executive committee meeting of the Baptist Convention of Swaziland. Discussion was quite enlightening and it was agreed that teaching on the doctrine of speaking in tongues needed to be addressed. The teaching is s scheduled to take place on the 22nd of May. Please pray for those preparing to teach. Wayne has been gathering and researching material and scripture. It is important that every point presented has scripture for clarification. Also from the discussion, it is quite obvious a few of those leading Swazi Baptist churches are not Baptist. Pray through this teaching many will understand Baptist doctrine and the scriptural concept of “tongues.” Pray members of our Baptist churches will commit to making their churches stronger in Baptist beliefs as well as Christian beliefs.

CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THESE REVIVALS:
· Maloma Baptist Church May 4-15. This revival is scheduled for two weeks and today begins the second week. Pray for those preaching God’s Word each evening and for many to come to know Jesus as their Savior.
· Ntuthwakazi Baptist Church May 18-23. Pray the church will be prepared to spiritually receive God’s blessings during this special event.

May 29-30 is the National Youth Leader’s Retreat. Pray for our NYC as they meet to finalize plans for the National Youth Leaders Retreat, National Youth Camp in August and other important issues for the youth of all the Swazi Baptist churches. Pray for the committee to be in unity and one mind on ALL decisions.

PLEASE PRAY FOR:
Update on Lisa's Dad: Lloyd Claiborne, underwent carotid artery surgery and suffered a stroke. Her Dad has now been transferred from Rex Hospital to the Bryant T. Aldridge Rehab Center in Rocky Mount, NC, Room 818. Please continue to pray for patience and strength for Lloyd as he begins this road to recovery, and also for her Mom, Catherine, and his doctors and nurses.

Tuesday May 5th, Lacie Allen underwent a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in Jo’burg. She will have her post surgery checkup tomorrow. Pray her check-up will go well and both Lacie and Monica will be able to return to Swaziland on Wednesday.

OTHER MEDICAL PRAYER CONCERNS:
-Terry Myers (stage 4 cancer) is finishing chemotherapy and presently holding his own as well as working 30-40 hours a week.
-Wayne’s oldest sister JoAnn was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Because of nausea she was only able to take one chemotherapy treatment. Therefore she is not receiving treatments and will be placed in a nursing home soon. Please continue to pray for Terry and JoAnn, especially for the Lord to draw them into His healing embrace.

- Pray for my niece’ husband’s, mom who has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Pray for the Lord’s strength and courage during this difficult time.
-Pray also for Kerry Harp who continues to recover from a motorcycle accident last year. Pray the Lord will wrap his loving arms around him and Kerry will feel His presence.

AIDS UPDATE:
Thank you for praying for Annah Thwala and myself as we traveled to Phuzumoya to conduct a children’s Bible study, Saturday 9th of May. Five churches were represented and 120 children were present!! The workers did a good job in grouping the children and teaching went well. We presented the children’s AIDS booklet, “Learning About
AIDS.” Please continue to pray the children in Swaziland will learn and understand how AIDS affects the body. Pray also each will learn and understand God’s plan for living and marriage.

PRAYING FOR OUR TROOPS:
Give thanks for the dedication and discipline of our nation’s military, praying for God’s gracious protection for each one. Pray for the holy covering and care for each one as they work to preserve the great freedoms we enjoy.

A Volunteer Reflections

My vocabulary doesn't contain the words to express what the week meant to me - in fact the dictionary doesn't even have words to convey to anyone the sentiments I feel. It's just something one has to experience for himself - that can't be put into words. I have never felt God's presence more real than I did then. Surely He was there and working in the hearts and souls of the people. It was so wonderful to see the response, the enthusiasm, the excitement of so many people- so hungry for the Word of God. My prayer from the time I knew I was going was that God would prepare the hearts of the people to receive His Son, and certainly He honored those prayers. It was one of the most amazing (as I said then, phenomenal ) experiences of my life. My prayer is that a church will soon be in the area so that the Spirit the people have now will not decrease before one is available for them. I feel that this is important, to keep that enthusiasm, and I KNOW the people want that. I appreciate and share Pastor Sigwane's concern for the people and will keep them in my prayers. I love every one of them and feel a special connection with them. Please share my love and best wishes with them. I wish I could express just what the experience meant to me, but sadly, there's no way.

In thinking back, I have so many special memories of those few days with our friends there. Special to me was the precious wall mat that Mrs. Magongo made and gave to me the last night we were there. Just to think that she cared for me so much is extra special. She is such a dear lady and I'll always remember her warm hugs. I also am touched by the couple and the two young children whom we visited with at their home and how receptive they were to the message of Jesus Christ, both of them asking Him to be their Lord and Savior. What a joy, knowing that if I never get back to Swaziland, I'll see them one day in Heaven!!!!! I also remember some we visited that did not accept Him. One said he would think about it and we're praying that he will make that decision. What a privilege it was to be able to go into the home of the family who had lost a loved one, and to offer words of comfort to them, to tell them that Jesus died for all of us and how they can know Him. Because I had lost my husband, mother, father and brother, I could sympathize with them, and they were so appreciative.

Having the opportunity to spend time with the young children was special. They are our world of tomorrow and being able to impress upon them that Jesus loves them was special. Hopefully some seeds were planted that will grow, that they will remember the things we told them about our Lord and Savior and that one day He will be as real to them as He is to me, thereby making their world a better place. The entire week was special and it's hard to choose the most impressive things. It was one of the most memorable weeks of my life - one that I truly thank God for allowing me to experience. God is so good!!! I promised the people that my prayers would be with them, and I intend to keep that promise every day.

Medical Updates on Swazi Team

MEDICAL UPDATES FROM THE SWAZI TEAM!!

Below are updates from the Allens concerning the children’s medicals and Lisa Warren’s dad!

We wanted to let everyone know that Lacie and Nathan did have their surgeries this week. Nathan was on Monday (outpatient surgery) and Lacie was on Tuesday. They both did well, although the days were quite long. We both were able to be with Nathan at the hospital as a missionary friend watched Lacie for us at the guest house. Steven stayed back with Nathan for his recovery and Monica went with Lacie for her surgery. Lacie had Coke and Doritos fairly soon after she woke up from her surgery. Not bad for just having her tonsils out. The doctor said her tonsils were huge and did not know how she even swallowed! Both kids have rested well, thanks to good pain meds! :) Nathan is almost back to his usual self.
The plan for now is that Steven and Nathan will return to Swaziland on Friday morning after Nathan gets his Hep A vaccination shot....poor guy! We need to do it on this side as we cannot get the shot in Swaziland. Lacie has a follow-up appointment with her ENT doc on Tuesday late afternoon so hopefully, Monica and Lacie will get medical clearance to return home on Wednesday.

Warren’s update sent Tuesday:
I did just receive an email that the feeding tube was placed in yesterday, and that went well. The doctors also said that his esophagus looked good, and he is talking more and even wanted a hamburger! Praise the Lord, yesterday was a good day!
Warren’s update sent Wednesday:
I have great news to share today ... Daddy passed his tests at Rex, and is now ready to be moved to Bryan T. Aldridge Rehab Center in Rocky Mount (spelling?) this week. They are hoping to move him today, but I have not heard if that happened yet or not. I will send out another update to all our prayer partners once I have details and hear from Mom for sure, but wanted to share this with all of you now!

Thank you for your wonderful prayer support for the Allens and Warrens. Please continue to pray for Nathan and Lacie’s full recovery from their surgeries. For safe travels as the Allen family return home on Friday and Wednesday. Also, continue praying for Lloyd Claiborne’s full recovery from his surgery and stroke last week.

“The one who plants and the one who waters work as a team with the same purpose …
we work together as partners who belong to God.” 1 Corinthians 3:8-9

Greetings from Tshaneni, and Happy Mother's Day!

I'm sure that each of you are excited to have warmer weather in your forecast, and are getting geared up for Summer and all the fun that brings! We are excited too as we have been feeling the coolness of Fall, and looking forward to Winter :) Fall is my absolute most favorite season and I didn't think I would experience much of that here. God has been so gracious to let me see falling leaves and feel the cool breezes here in the beautiful mountains of Swaziland. He is truly concerned about the "little" things in life that bring us pleasure.

April was quite a busy month for our entire team here in Swaziland, and I apologize for this update being a little behind. In the midst of this past month, we did have the privilege to travel to Johannesburg for a time of rejuvenation with our mission families from throughout Southern Africa. We praise the Lord for providing this time and for the volunteer teams that came to encourage us and teach our children through VBS. Our blog has been updated and you can "see" some of the blessings.

Several months ago, Pastor Sigwane from Phuzamoya Baptist Church met with our Strategy Leader, Wayne Myers, and shared his passion for reaching the people of Maphungwane. At the end of March, Bert was able to meet with Pastor Sigwane and accompany him to this village and meet the induna to ask for permission to have revival services. The induna had questions about this, and wanted to know what the intentions of these services would be. The joy on his face was clear as Pastor Sigwane shared that we would like to eventually see a church come to this village. The induna, who is of the traditional Zionist religion, then said ... "We have been praying for a church to come here for a long time."

Prayers were answered, and on April 22nd, we welcomed Chris, Janice, and Ron from the South Roanoke Baptist Association in North Carolina. COUNTLESS prayer partners, THREE volunteers, TWO tents, a pastor's vision and ONE Mighty God! The team spent several days in Maphungwane serving alongside Pastor Sigwane and his home church as they held tent revivals, bible studies, children's ministry, homestead visitations and the showing of the Jesus film. Pastor Sigwane had predicted that there would be large crowds each day due to the local schools being closed for 1st term break. Each night there were more people than the night before. So many that TWO revival tents erected together could NOT hold them. Each night the walls of the tents would be taken down in order that those who could not get inside would be able to see and hear. On one particular night over 400 people were present ... praise the Lord!

We were all overwhelmed to see how the Lord was working in this village, and how prayers were being answered ... there were many professions of faith made each night, so many that we found ourselves to be ill prepared to even record all the names. Only Jesus knows for sure the number of souls that He now calls His own. As the week ended, the people were saddened to realize that the revival was ending and the tents were going to come down. Due to this, the revivals continued for FIVE more days after the team departed back to the States. During the last day of services, there were 81 people who signed their names stating that they wanted to take steps towards becoming a Baptist church ... WOW!

During this same morning service, many of the new believers came forward and gave their testimonies of how the Lord was now working in their lives. We were all very moved as we sat and listened to each one ...

"Now that I have accepted the Lord, I can understand now."

"I have never heard preaching like this before, now I know the TRUTH."

"One day as I was working to build my house, these people came and shared the truth with me, and now I have been accepted by God."

"I did not think I was worthy of coming to services, because I did not have proper cloths, but I was accepted just as I am, and now I know God."

Please continue to pray for these new believers, that they will grow each day in the Lord and become strong in their faith. Pray that THEY will lead many more to Christ, and that this community will see and understand the Mighty hand of God. We praise God for all the many prayers that were lifted long before services began, and for Chris, Ron and Janice giving of themselves to be His hands and feet here in Swaziland!

On a personal note, many of you know that Lisa's Dad, Lloyd Claiborne, underwent carotid artery surgery last week, and suffered a stroke. Words cannot express enough how much YOU have meant to our family here in Africa, and to her parents in the States. Thank you for continuing to remember us in your prayers and for the many different ways you are ministering to us all. Her Dad has now been transferred from Rex Hospital to the Bryant T. Aldridge Rehab Center in Rocky Mount, NC, Room 818. Praise the Lord, it has been just a little over a week since his surgery and stroke. Please continue to pray for patience and strength for Lloyd as he begins this road to recovery, and also for her Mom, Catherine, and his doctors and nurses. Another answer to prayer is that the staff as graciously agreed to communicate with us through email so that we will be able to receive regular updates on his progress. Thank you Karen, Joni and the entire staff that will be guiding and encouraging him in his recovery!

Being so far away has been difficult, but we have been reminded this week exactly how much God cares for us, and how He provides for our needs. Many of you have shared this verse, and it has been of great encouragement, thank you. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7 I believe this sums it up pretty well, don't you? Know that we can feel your prayers so strongly, and God is continuing to grant us peace each and every day as we trust in His plan.

Also during this past week, we lost a wonderful Christian lady who will be missed dearly, Granny Harrell (Mrs. Ella Harrell). She has been a special part of Bert's family for many, many years, and we all love her like a grandmother. Before leaving the States, we were able to spend time with her and are so thankful how the Lord granted this time to say our goodbyes in person. Please remember her family in your prayers also, especially this Sunday on Mother's Day.

Thank you for all your love, support and prayers!Serving Him together,

~ The Warren Family

We have an extra mission truck that needs to get back to Swaziland so it is helpful this time for us to get some of the family home earlier than waiting around Jo'burg.

Thank you for all your prayers for us during this time and we pray everyone is doing well.

Miss everyone lots!

More Update on Lisa's Dad

Sorry that it has taken me so long to send out another update ... it has been a slow process getting information, and waiting on test results. I do want to let you know just how much I appreciate all your prayers, love and encouraging emails for me, Bert and the kids. And also for the many different ways you are ministering to my parents back in the States. Thank you for giving of your time to travel with Mom to the hospital each day, the many hospital visits, cards, phone calls, and continuous prayers. What a gift it is to have such wonderful family and friends who are always there no matter the hour or distance! I love you all so much!

Throughout this past week, Dad has undergone several different tests, including an MRI this weekend. The MRI showed no swelling, but did show a definite stroke. We are waiting to hear as to what extent the damage caused by the stroke is. He has been experiencing no movement in his left arm/leg, slurred speech and is still not able to swallow well. They will be placing a feeding tube in today in order to keep his strength up. His coloring and speech seem to be much better today, and he was even able to move his leg a little, praise the Lord! He will remain at Rex Hospital for now until his doctor feels he is strong enough to be transferred to Rocky Mount to begin rehabilitation therapy, which will be much closer for my Mom. They say this will be a very long process, but are optimistic.

It has been hard being so far away, and not being able to "see" for myself what is going on, and then waiting to hear results. Please know that I can feel your prayers so strongly, and that God is granting me peace each and every day. I have been praying about traveling back, and continue to ask the Lord what is best ... the doctors and nurses feel that it would not be in Dad's best interest right now, and that I should wait a little further down the road. Each time they mention the idea of me coming back, he gets too emotional, which they say is normal for stroke patients. Please pray for guidance in making the right decision, the one that is best for him, not me.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart ... I will update again as soon as I know more.
Thank you for all your love, support and prayers!

Myers Weekly Prayer Letter - May 4, 2009

“Simply phenomenal” was used by one of the volunteer team members for what occurred last week in the Maphungweni area (outside Siteki). The team was quite overwhelmed by the response of the people as they shared the gospel, conducted Bible studies and revival meetings. Two revival tents connected together could not hold all the people that came to hear the word preached. Many stood during the services or sat outside the tents when there was no room inside. One evening over 400 people came. Many throughout the week responded to the call to accept Jesus as their Savior. The volunteer team left Thursday for the States but revival services continued until yesterday. Wayne and I had the joy of seeing over 150 people come for Sunday morning worship. Plans were made by Pastor Sigwane and Bert Warren with those interested for prayer service on Thursday and Sunday morning worship in Pastor Sigwane’s family homestead.
What brought such a tremendous response from the people? God’s people praying!! Prayer for this ministry began long before the volunteer team arrived. Pastor Sigwane had a vision for his home area and asked the missionaries and volunteer team members to join in this vision. We also asked you to join us as well. Thank You for your prayer support and for being a part of this phenomenal occurrence.
Please pray for those who made decisions during the revival services to understand the commitment made. Pray for true revival to continue in this community.

One of the volunteer team members from North Carolina that ministered last week in Maphungweni was handicapped. Each evening he rolled his wheelchair to the front and preached to the people. Through this witness several handicapped people came to the revival services. One lady with a daughter born with only one leg shared with the team that she was concerned for her daughter. She wanted to be sure she had an education so she could send her somewhere safe. “If she stays here men will abuse her and treat her badly because she will not be able to defend herself. I must send her away for her protection.”. What a heartfelt cry from a loving mother. Unfortunately, there are many in Swaziland living in fear. These are the innocent victims of sexual abuse and rape. Pray for protection for girls living in situations that are not safe and lead to sexual abuse and possible death. Pray the Swazi government will take notice of the plight of women and children and will seek to pass laws that will protect them. Pray for a safer place to live for the handicapped and children that will allow them to have a future.

CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THESE REVIVALS:
· Maloma Baptist Church May 4-9. Services begin this evening and end on Saturday.
· Ntuthwakazi Baptist Church May 11-15.

PLEASE PRAY FOR:
-Lisa Warren’s father underwent surgery on the 28th but problems occurred and it is felt he might have had a stroke. The family is waiting on the results of the MRI taken last week. Continue to pray for Lloyd Claiborne’s recovery from his surgery and possible stroke. Pray for the family as they wait to hear the results of the MRI.

Tomorrow May 5th, Lacie Allen is scheduled for her tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in Jo’burg. Her surgery was cancelled last Tuesday due to cold and congestion. Pray she will be able to have the surgery and for her speedy recovery.

OTHER MEDICAL PRAYER CONCERNS:
Wayne was able to talk to two sisters and brother (SKYPE) last evening and received these updates:
-Terry (stage 4 cancer) is finishing chemotherapy and presently holding his own as well as working 30-40 hours a week.
-His oldest sister JoAnn was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Because of nausea she was only able to take one chemotherapy treatment. Therefore she is not receiving treatments and will be placed in a nursing home soon.

-- Pray for Kimber and Julia Tarr as they attend their debriefing conference at the International Learning Center May 5-9. Continue to pray both will adjust to living in the USA.

AIDS UPDATE:
Saturday May 9th, Annah Thwala and I will conduct a children’s Bible study at the Phuzumoya Baptist Church. We plan to teach the children’s AIDS booklet, “Learning About AIDS”. We have been told to prepare for about 100 children. Pray as we gather materials and booklets for this large number of children. Pray the lessons and activities taught from the booklet will help the children learn about AIDS and how it affects the body. Pray also each will learn and understand God’s plan for living and marriage.

PRAYING FOR OUR TROOPS:
Pray for the members of our military who are risking their lives in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world, asking God to protect and guard each one.
